Title
Spring hot or cold?

Problem Scenario

I am asking this question to see what temp a spring would have the most force and i think it might be able to help other people

Broad Question

what effects will different temperatures have on springs?

Specific Question

what happens to the force of a spring when it is heated and cooled to various temperatures?

Hypothesis

I predict that when the spring is at medium temperature it will have more force than if it is at a high temperature or low temperature.

Variables

Independent Variable:

temperature of the spring

Dependent Variable:

force of the spring

Variables That Need To Be Controlled:

spring
distance pulled
measurments (inches,centimeters,etc.)
time held

Vocabulary List That Needs Explanation

force- Strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement

General Plan

im going to heat up, cool, and room temperature springs to see which will take more force and write it on a data table.

Potential Problems And Solutions

springs could brake. Be careful with them. buy extra
each spring could get a different distance pulled. measure the distance pulled to make sure its the same.
I could hold the spring for different times. Time how long to hold it for.

Safety Or Environmental Concerns

Burn Myself while heating up the spring. wear oven mitt if needed
spring could snap and hit someone. wear glasses to protect me

Results

My graph shows that the lower the temperature is the higher the force is, the higher the temperature is the lower the force will be.So it shows a pattern that it goes down from lower the temperature from higher the temperature. I also added the error bars to the graph. The error bars show that there is a 95 percent chance that if i do more of this experiment the average could be between the error bars. It also shows if some of the temperatures are actually different or are they just about the same. This graph over all shows that when the spring is heated the force isn't very high but when the spring is cooled it takes a little more force than it would if it was heated.

Conclusion

I reject my hypothesis that the medium temperature will have the most force. lower and higher temperature It was the lower the temperature the higher the force the higher the temperature the lower the force will be.

Discussion

The meaning of my experiment was the see what temperature would have the most or least force. If someone else in the future wanted to learn something or experiment with springs they could look at this page and it could help them with backround research or give them some ideas.

Benefit to Community and/or Science

If people in the community or science needed to know something to do with temperature and springs they could see what temperature would make the spring have the most force or the least force.

Abstract

In my experiment i wanted to find out what temperature would effect the force in a spring. So what i did was tape a ruler to a table, get something to measure force. Then i left the springs out on a table to get room temperature then took the springs one by one and measured the force. Then i put the springs in the refrigerator and oven. Then one by one took them out and measured the force. I had a piece of paper with me the whole time to write down my data and then transferred it to the computer. Experiment done.
